VIA KEEPS YOUNG PEOPLE SAFE THROUGH 'RISKY BEHAVIOUR' PROJECT

8 February 2012

The Via Partnership has recently launched a new targeted prevention programme to raise the awareness of risk taking behaviour amongst young people.

The Reducing Risk Taking Behaviour Project sees young people aged 13 to 16, at high schools such as Parklands High, Chorley, engaging in interactive sessions aiming to reduce risky behaviour and support them in keeping safe.

The young people involved benefit from sessions highlighting the dangers of binge drinking and drug taking, online safety workshops to ensure that they are safe when using social media such as Facebook and chat rooms, and also receive guidance on sexual health and relationships.

In order to improve young people’s self esteem and confidence through developing social skills and understanding the consequences of their actions, the project includes activities such as role plays, quizzes and group discussions, which will also help improve their school attainment.

Rahila Hussain, project manager at The Via Partnership said:  “With the sessions being fun and interactive, the young people are really keen to be involved and it is good to see them taking in the key messages whilst enjoying themselves and developing their social skills. As an organisation we work hard to improve people’s life skills and employability, this project is a fantastic example of helping people from a young age.”

Councillor Mark Perks Cabinet member for Young People at Lancashire County Council said: “Projects such as this provide valuable advice and guidance to young people about a whole range of risky behaviours, and also supports them in how best to keep safe.  I was delighted to experience first -hand some key aspects of the workshops young people take part in."

The programme is commissioned by Lancashire County Council, through the local Children’ and Young People's Trust Board. Activities in Albany Science College, Parklands High School and Southlands High School began last month, with a view to rolling the programme out to other high schools over the coming months.
